Bye bye 2016, hello 2017

Whether you agree or not with me that 2016 has been a funny auld year, it’s true that we have a lot to celebrate. So here we are, a year in (brief) review.

The family keeps getting bigger! There are now 48 of you lovely people doing PhD research on open education around the globe, from Australia to the US, and Sweden to South Africa (amigos latinoamericanos, ¿qué pasa con ustedes? ¡Que nos falta alegría de la buena!). If in 2015 we celebrated Bernardo and Anne being the first GO-GN alumni, this year there were not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5 but 6 conferrals: congratulations Dr Bozkurt, Dr Cox, Dr Prasad, Dr Cáceres Piñuel, Dr Nkuyubwatsi and Dr Jordan!

Indeed April was the happiest month. We launched this website, travelled to Kraków for the 5th GO-GN seminar and OEGlobal, and kicked off the #FirstWednesdayofEveryMonth webinar series. There is a lot to catch up on if you haven’t had a chance during the past months, so head over to our YouTube channel and have a feast on the impact and efficacy of open textbooks, the self as an OER, Sri Lankan teacher education and more. And that’s only for starters. As a main, read Jamison’s, Chrissi’s or Viviane’s blog posts on their take on our Polish adventure, tasty and filling. Pining for dessert? My favourite: the unsweetened and pure GO-GN by GO-GN.

Kudos to Sujata, Aras, Glenda, Nikolaos and all of you who got papers published in 2016. I know Paco has a couple of things coming out, but I’m sure I’ve missed a lot so please, do let me know what you are up to, what you have published, where you have presented your work, what you would like to do and what you would like your fellow GO-GNers to help you with. One gentle nudge: the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.

What is there to look forward to in 2017? More webinars, a trip to Cape Town for the 6th GO-GN seminar and OEGlobal, the launch of the GO-GN Awards for Best Paper and Best Open Research, and (hopefully) a mini online conference come the summer – updates, as always, on Twitter and your mailboxes from January.

Best wishes to everyone, have a peaceful time wherever you are. I hope that 2017 is a good one. Happy Year of Open!
