K-12 Open Learning: An Overview and Dialogue

For many of us, September is back to school time, right? Aaaah those early mornings, school runs, lunch boxes, homework, after-school routines… ok, I’m making it all up, but this is true: we haven’t talked about OER in schools since Penny’s webinar exactly one year ago. To put things right and start at the beginning, we are happy to host a fabulous combo of K12 experts: Connie Blomgren and Verena Roberts.

K-12 Open Learning: An Overview and Dialogue

Connie and Verena will provide an overview of K-12 OER and open learning practices within Alberta and Canada. The overview will describe the past, the current situation and emerging trends that emerged when making the Multiply K-12 OER media project (videos and podcasts). They will also discuss their current research in the area of openness and open learning. The second part of the presentation will be a short set of questions that each presenter will answer with participation from the viewing audience.

Dr Connie Blomgren is an Assistant Professor in the Centre for Distance Education, Athabasca University, Canada. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses with the University of Lethbridge and Athabasca University (Master of Arts – Integrated Studies), in addition to 25 years in public education, teaching junior and senior high school students. She was the project lead for the Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) initiative.

Verena Roberts is a passionate online and blended K-12 educator and consultant. She is currently a Werklund School of Education (University of Calgary) doctoral candidate, sessional instructor and research assistant, who is completing an EdD in Learning Science with a focus on Open Educational Practices (OEP) in K-12 Learning Environments.

This webinar took place on Wednesday, September 5th at 16.00 UK time.
