OUTLINE (based on OER16 presentation and Prof Hacker Article)

Most discourse on Open Educational Resources (OER) focus on open educational materials and tools, such as course materials in text, audio, or video format, open textbooks, and educational software. But what if we adopt a different perspective, a broader understanding of OERs, which includes the processes and products of open scholarship as valuable, and viable, resources too? What if we focus on these practices as much as educational content in our conversations on OER? In this conversation we hope to demonstrate how a person could become an open educational resource for others by drawing from our own research and everyday practice. We will also discuss challenges and limitations to this, hopefully drawing from participants’ own experiences and questions during the session.

Suzan Koseoglu (@suzankoseoglu) is an academic developer at the Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre at Goldsmiths, University of London, and an adjunct faculty in Learning Technologies at the University of Minnesota. She is a reviewer for two journals: Journal of Formative Design in Learning and Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education. Suzan successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on open participants’ experiences in a massive open online course in May, 2016. You can read her work here.

Maha Bali (@bali_maha) is an associate professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching at the American University in Cairo. She’s the co-founder of www.Virtuallyconnecting.org and co-facilitator of www.edcontexts.org. She’s the International Director of Digital Pedagogy Lab, an editor at Hybrid Pedagogy, and editorial board member at Journal of Pedagogic Development and Learning, Media & Technology.
